73 expertos en educación exigen la reducción del número de alumnos por aula en Nueva York

Estimada Chancellor Fariña:

Los abajo firmantes, profesores e investigadores, le instamos a que presente un plan agresivo pero factible para reducir el número de niños por aula en las escuelas públicas de Nueva York. El curso pasado, el número de niños por aula fue el mayor en 15 años en los cursos de Kindergarten-3º, y el mayor desde 2002 en los cursos 4º-8º. Más de 330.000 niños estaban en clases de 30 o más alumnos, según datos del Departamento de Educación.

Como usted sabe, la investigación muestra de forma clara que el número de niños por aula es un factor importante para todos los alumnos, pero en particular para el alumnado con riesgo de bajo rendimiento, incluyendo los niños de color, los que están en una situación de probreza, los alumnos que tienen que aprender inglés y el alumnado con necesidades especiales. Es por esto que la reducción del número de niños en el aula he demostrado ser una de las pocas reformas que reducen la brecha en el rendimiento.

También está demostrado que las clases con menos alumnos aumentan el compromiso de los estudiantes, experimentan menos problemas de disciplina y tasas de abandono, y reducen el desgaste de los docentes. Ningún maestro, no importa lo experto o preparado que esté, puede ser realmente eficaz en las masificadas clases que existen en muchas de las escuelas públicas de nuestra ciudad. 

Creemos que los beneficios de muchas de las reformas positivas que la ciudad está planteando –como el aumento del acceso a la educación infantil universal, el establecimiento de escuelas comunitarias y la inclusión de los alumnos con discapacidad– pueden ser socavadas a menos que se invierta la tendencia a aumentar el número de alumnos en las aulas y se produzca una reducción del tamaño de los grupos en las escuelas públicas de la ciudad.

En particular, la participación de alumnos con necesidades especiales en clases de 25, 30 o más, no va a dar respuesta a sus necesidades individuales, ni tampoco a las necesidades de los otros alumnos del aula.

Las escuelas de la ciudad de Nueva York tienen las clases más grandes del estado y están entre las más numerosas de la nación. Estamos firmemente convencidos de que unos resultados más equitativos dependen de una mayor equidad en las oportunidades. Le felicitamos por su compromiso con la ampliación de los programas de educación infantil pero, como usted sabe, la educación infantil no comienza y acaba a los 4 años.

Le urgimos a centrarse desde ahora en la reducción de tamaño de las clases en todos los cursos, lo que mejorará la enseñanza y el aprendizaje en nuestras escuelas públicas.
